Somehow we got to a wrong place from google map keying in only "Tokiwa Ryokan" but not the full address. We got to wrong place at 9pm plus and only realized it about 9.30-9.40pm ....while last check in time was suppose to be 10pm. I called up Tokiwa Ryokan and communicate through Google translate saying we only can reach 10.30pm. Owner / Staff is kind enough to allow, and when we arrived, he even offered to extend bath hours to 11.30pm for us (usually is until 11pm). Feel touched with the extra mile.

The staff was really friendly, they even stored our luggage and later put them in our room. The onsen was comfortably hor. The food smelled really good but we didn’t have time to eat there. It’s close, by bus, to Tōshō-gū. The yukatas they let you use for free were really comfy, as well as the beds. The room felt japanese and not western, which was nice.

love the food and the room! there are 2 showers in the bath so may get crowded depending on timing but temperature is great. location is quiet and near familymart too!

Tokiwa Ryokan is a very fair priced gem I can very much recommend. The location is good: it can easily be reached by Tobu Bus (Bus Stop 18). From there, you can easily get to both Chuzenji Lake/Yumoto Onsen and the world heritage area. The owners are very friendly, breakfast and dinner (book in advance) are amazing. It is a great place to stay even for foreigners and I can only encourage you to consider it.

The couple running the inn were marvelous. Just so sweet, thoughtful and caring. The room, facilities were nice. Have to compliment the amazing food being served by them on request. I was so full but still couldn't stop eating. We missed our bus to the train station early morning and the owners went out of their way to drop us.

We changed dates very last minute and they were accommodating. The room was perfect for me and my husband. All necessities were there. The Japanese breakfast was just amazing! That alone made up for the anything that would fall short. We were not able to use the onsen as we were only there for a night.

Honestly, I was blown away by the place. Definitely deserves a higher score by all accounts! The value for money is 100% there, and even more. The place was tidy and clean, the room was the best I have seen in Japanese ryokan (think they recently renovated). For this value hard-pressed to find anything better! I think some people have an issue with the location (but then, pick a better location :)). Access with a car was great. And for those who are missing out on the dinner (like we), there is a super nice Chinese restaurant a few minutes walk away, run by a local family.. super tasty food! For this value, would easily come back for more. Also liked the breakfast, again for the value.. hard-pressed to beat that!

The room was clean and we had a good time in Nikko staying here. It is located between the lake and the temple area, about 20min to travel on either sides. The shower area had a small pool, big enough for three comfortably to relax. As there are no food options nearby, you may want to consider having the ryokan meals or have it in the Nikko town area become coming in. There is a Family Mart in the vicinity as well.

Very good Japanese style hotel, combing the Japanese ambience, supreme food, and western style comfort (private bathroom and shower).

Absolutely loved the breakfasts! Just a really relaxed atmosphere, traditional Japanese bathroom (but with own toilet), tatami floors - a great experience. Also on bus route and easy walk to a family Mart for supplies.
